GNSS-denied localisation: reducing cost and complexity with WayFinder Prime

Mining Vehicles
Whether you’re an automotive engineer testing ADAS features on the open-road, or a mapping engineer looking to localise another sensor for georeferencing purposes, developing new products that provide accurate localisation without GNSS requires you to integrate additional sensors into a system.

GNSS-denied localisation solutions have one clear goal – to stabilise position drift. That process can be costly, both in terms of integration time (particularly if you have more than two sensors to integrate) and the cost of development. But, what if there was an out-of-the-box solution where sensor integration was already taken care ofA solution that you could take out of the box, mount and use to accurately localise your vehicle in any environment – with or without GNSS!

If you’re working on a project that involves localisation in a range of different environments, including urban canyons and GNSS-denied spaces, then we have a solution that could do just that – WayFinder Prime. It’s a device that provides centimetre-level position accuracy in both open-sky and GNSS-denied spaces and can switch seamlessly between them, ensuring uninterrupted positioning everywhere.

In this blog, we’ll look at several ways using an out-of-the-box solution for localisation in any environment can save you both time and money.

WayFinder Prime cuts GNSS-denied localisation integration complexity

Sensor integration and fusion is one of the most intricate elements of building any localisation solution, particularly those that need to operate in GNSS-denied spaces. The choice of sensors, designing them into your platform, and building interfaces to bring the data from those sensors into your navigation engine are all complex pieces of work. Our latest solution, WayFinder Prime, designed for engineers looking to integrate GNSS-denied localisation into their projects, removes the need for most of that work with a pre-integrated set of sensors that are ready to use out of the box.

WayFinder: GNSS-denied localisation

To enable GNSS-denied localisation, WayFinder Prime makes use of three sensors:

  • An inertial navigation system comprising an inertial measurement unit and GNSS receivers.
  • A 360° LiDAR scanner.
  • Two cameras.

We’ve already done all the work to select, install, and integrate these sensors so that they produce reliable and accurate localisation data. All you have to do is install WayFinder Prime on your platform (ideally near the top to make the best use of the LiDAR) and integrate the localisation data feed into your solution. Which brings us to the next advantage WayFinder Prime gives you…

WayFinder Prime includes useful software tools and applications

The other headache many localisation engineers wrestle with when trying to figure out sensor integration for GNSS-denied localisation is bridging the gap between different systems. Often this will involve coding custom applications and interfaces, which can take time and involve unfamiliar coding languages or operating systems. Once again, WayFinder Prime has eliminated most of this work for you.

There are multiple tools and applications that are available to you when working with WayFinder Prime:

  • WayFinder Prime includes its own interface for you to monitor system performance and validate that the data you’re getting is accurate.
  • OXTS NAVsuite is a free suite of applications for configuring the GNSS/INS in WayFinder Pride.
  • For robotics projects, OXTS has ROS2 drivers that enable you to integrate your localisation data into your robotic control stack.
  • For georeferencing projects, OXTS Georeferencer enables you to quickly and easily georeference point cloud data from your survey LiDAR using localisation data from WayFinder Prime.
For the POC and Beyond

WayFinder Prime has great potential to save developers money and time as they prototype new products. But WayFinder Prime’s use goes beyond the POC stage. Our vision for WayFinder Prime is to give automotive testing and mapping localisation experts a gnss-denied localisation solution that is equally adept at providing centimetre-level position accuracy, without GNSS as it is, with.
